CAMPING NEAR THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER
Original Oil Painting on Canvas SOLD to Private Collector, Bell California

This  is one of  the my earlier paintings. The concept or idea for this painting was
from historical  facts  about the Plains Indians  surviving  in  the winter along the
Yellowstone River.    I painted the cool greens and grays in the painting allowing
the  red  and  orange  fire  in  the tipi  to draw your attention and bring warmth to
the painting.

Available in Limited Edition Giclee Print on Canvas and Fine Art Paper

BEARHEART, LAKOTA SIOUX
Original Oil Painting on Canvas  AVAILABLE  24"h x 36"
Available for resale by Private Collector
Contact the Artist at shop@barbarasullivan.com to inquire

Bear  Heart is  a Lakota  Sioux  Medicine   Man.  He   was
eighty    years    old  when  I painted  him.  It   is  very rare
for  a  Native  American  to  be  painted with such a sacred
symbol  as  the  Peace  Pipe.  I   feel  very  honored   to  be
given  this  opportunity.  Three  bears are  painted  into the
backround  of this painting.  The Bear represented strength
and courage and was held in great reverence by the Indians.
What  could  be  more  appropriate  than  to include them in
Bear  Heart's painting, a man of great  strength and courage.

CHILD OF THE SIOUX

Original Oil Painting on Canvas SOLD to Private Collector, Las Vegas, Nevada

Native  Americans  in  general  were  fond  of children. Their  parents  did not
have family  names handed down from  fathers  to sons  or daughters.   Each
had their own  individual  name. Girls usually  got their  names from  flowers
and pretty  things  in nature.   A  boy  might  take  his name  from  something
he  saw   in  a  dream.   He  might  also  change  it  several times if he felt the
name was  unlucky.   Historical   information   from  "The   American   Indian"

DAUGHTER OF WHITE EAGLE
Original Oil Painting on Canvas SOLD to Private Collector, Las Vegas, Nevada

Daughter  of  White Eagle is a painting of a Paiute woman, Carmen Martineau.
She magnificently wears one of her hand made ceremonial dresses. She softens
her  own leathers and carefully sews on each bead by hand. A dress sometimes
takes  a year  or  more to complete. In  the background you can see her beloved
wolf dog, her companion for many years. If you look further, you will see three
wolf cubs. On  Carmen’s left is a mother  bear and her cubs. The bear sustained
life  for  the Indian  by  providing  meat  for  food and  their skins  made  warm
robes and moccasins for the winter.

DISTANT VOICES, PAIUTE
Originl Oil Painting on Canvas SOLD to a Private Collector, Las Vegas, Nevada

Carmen  is from  the Shivwits Band of Paiutes in Southern  Arizona. She is expecting friends
and anxiously peers out  into  the desert. Both she  and  her  horse hear voices in  the distance.
As soon as her friends are in sight, she will go down and meet them. Carmen has spent man
months  designing,  beading  and sewing  both  hers and her horse's outfits… perhaps just  for
               this special occasion!
