"Bear Heart" is a Lakota Sioux Medicine
Man. He was eighty years old when the artist met him. It is
very rare for a Native American to pose with such a sacred
symbol as the Peace Pipe. The artist feels very honored to
have been given this opportunity. Three bears are painted
into the background of this painting. The bear represented
strength and courage and was held in great reverence by the
Indians. What could be more appropriate than to include
them in Bear Heart's painting, a man of great strength and
courage. —Barbara Sullivan
