"Daughter of White Eagle" is a painting of
Carmen Martineau, from the Shivwits Band of Paiutes in
Arizona. She magnificently wears a ceremonial dress she
handmade by softening her own leathers and carefully sewing
on each bead by hand. A dress sometimes takes a year or
more to complete. In the background I have washed in
Carmen's beloved wolfdog, her companion for many years. If
you look further you will see three wolf cubs. On Carmen's
left is a mother bear and her cubs. The bear sustained life
for the Indians by providing meat and warm robes and
moccasins for the winter. —Barbara Sullivan
