Keeya, a little girl from the Shivwits Band of Paiutes in
Southern Arizona, plays gleefully in her favorite tree.
When she grows up she will be known, along with other
Paiute women, as the women of the desert, respected and
admired. They are especially known for their superior
basket weaving. The Paiute name is said to mean "Water Ute"
or "True Ute".—Barbara Sullivan
