"Music of the Paiute Sisters" is a
painting of Shanna and Jetta, sisters from the Shivwits
Band of Paiutes. Flutes were widely used among the Indian
people. If you quietly listen, you can almost hear the
music. Their dresses and flutes display the traditional
designs in paintings, beads and quilt work handed down from
their ancestors. On the right side of the painting I have
painted a basket as a tribute – the Paiute women were
well known for their superior basket weaving. The setting
for this painting is inside a tipi. A light, through the
opening above, gently falls illuminating their figures and
the basket. —Barbara Sullivan
