The American bison, we call the buffalo, provided
everything the Plains Indians needed - food, clothing,
weapons, shelter. Buckskin is usually thought of as
deerskin. However, buckskin was made from other skins and
hides such as the buffalo. Sometimes the hair was left on
the softened skin. The paint used to paint the skins was
made from animal parts and nature, such as flowers, bark
and other vegetable matter.—Barbara Sullivan
